As we often say in non-profit organizations, and Rotary is no exception, to truly get the most out of membership is to join and get involved on a committee. This message was taken to heart this past year by LA5s exemplary Marketing Committee, ably Chaired by Heather Shuemaker, along with incoming chair Malinda Monterrosa, Paul Ekstrand, Chrissy Moses, Michael Stevens Rico Montanez, and Lauren Schlau.
Holding lively and efficient Monday noon phone call meetings, the Committee took up the Executive Committee’s challenge to deliver more effective member communications. Joining the calls to ensure consistent and accurate messaging was VP Program Chair Matt Ball, President Erick Weiss and President-elect Rick Gibson.
Over the year we focused on enhanced social media, more content for El Rodeo and thanks to Heather and Past President Charisse, forged our unprecedented partnership with Modern Luxury Magazine that provided us an excellent vehicle for exposure to the wider community.
As the year drew to a close with a change of leadership in sight, incoming Chair Malinda sent an amazing invitation for the Committee to get together - not on the phone or in a meeting room, but rather to have dinner together at Gwen Restaurant in Hollywood especially to recognize and thank Heather. Also joining us were Erick, Rick, Past President Charisse and Mark Mendelsohn from Modern Luxury.
Starting with cocktails on the eatery’s veranda, we moved upstairs to our own room. On the table before each of us a set menu described a delectable five course dinner starting with a charcuterie tray, followed by a fresh green salad, agnolotti, a fish or steak entrée, and dessert of white chocolate lemon cremeux yogurt.
Yet more than the scrumptious food was our exchange. Rather than mini-side conversations, we each took a turn sharing our thoughts on the Committee, Rotary and our own lives and values. Soon we each realized that we were really connecting in this intimate setting and getting to know and enjoy one another even more!
This was truly an evening to remember and a template for what makes Rotary and Rotarians special. The main take-away - join a Rotary Committee and you WILL be rewarded.
