In terms of investing, how should we perceive risk?
Howard Marks CFA states in an interview with David Spaulding CIPM that what“[investors] shouldn’t do is take risks of which [they] are unaware, that can’t be analyzed, that can’t be diversified, and for which [they]’re not well paid. That would not be intelligent risk bearing”
Howard Marks writes about a rather unconventional, flexible definition of risk in his book, The Most Important Thing: Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor. Going against the common thought and theories presented by Markowitz and Sharpe, Howard Marks deems “risk is a bad thing” and justifies it with the statement spoken to David Spaulding; He adds onto say that good investments require not only diversification and risk-control, but the intuition and the analytical eye of an investor.
Other than succeeding as a fixed-income fund manager, Howard Marks is an involved philanthropist as he has done a lot to give back to the community especially towards students and their education. . Howard serves as a member on the Investment Committees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Edmund J. Safra Foundation; a Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Drawing School; and an Emeritus Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. To give some sense of how Howard gives back to students and artists... Edmund J. Safra Foundation has played an integral part in revitalizing education in 40 different countries and has earned astounding results with cooperative initiatives with over 100 different organizations. The Foundation encompasses four areas: Education; Science and Medicine; Religion; and Humanitarian Assistance, Culture, and Social Welfare. The Royal Drawing School is a education organization and a registered charity that offers gifted artists a revolutionary and creative way of viewing art and producing masterpieces.
